"The Lost Colony | Crafted Pour"

"This is a riff on Mr Boston’s cocktail Virginia Dare (my idea for the name at first). The original sounded like such a wonderful drink that I considered going with that, but since I’m doing this whole special-ecial series I knew I had to make this my own. I keep the dark(ish) rums, Benedictine, and Ango bitters, but instead of fresh pear I went with my wonderful new liqueur from St George. I added lime and Liber and Co’s excellent Gum Syrup to make this a more typical sour build and did not regret it: this was one of the best cocktails I’ve ever made! Roanoke is steeped in mystery-history, and Virginia Dare is thought to be the first English person born in the new world. However, the entire colony disappeared, and while we have plenty of theories, the true story may never be known. I didn’t know where exactly I was going to shoot this picture, but we found the Elizabethan Gardens at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and while we walked through enjoying the beautiful flowers and plant life, an employee stopped us to tell the riveting tale of the Virginia Dare statue in the picture. It was crafted in Rome by American Maria Louise Lander in the mid 1800’s but on the voyage to Boston, the ship sank. 2 years later it was recovered and travelled to Boston where it survived a fire and, its owner having perished, was returned to Ms Lander, who willed it to the state of North Carolina. It was displayed and hidden at different times, until finally it was added to the Garden when it was built in 1951, and 70 years later here I am taking a cocktail picture in front of it!", "undefined", "The Lost Colony",
