Adding mulling spices to simple syrup can give your cocktails a cozy winter flavor. Using a mulled simple syrup in a whisky or gin sour is a crowd-pleasing seasonal favorite at my house during the holidays.
Ingredients:
-
Whiskey
-
Lemon Juice
Instructions:
Add all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake (no ice). Then shake with a large ice cube until chilled. Pour into a chilled glass and sprinkle with nutmeg. Substitute a dry gin for the whiskey if you prefer.
Mulled Simple Syrup Recipe
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
0.25 tsp ginger
2 cinnamon sticks (or 0.25 tsp ground cinnamon)
0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
12 whole cloves (or 0.25 tsp ground cloves)
1-2 cardamom pods
3–4 star anise pods
Two orange peels
4 droppers of orange bitters
Combine water, sugar, and spices in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, to dissolve sugar. Remove from stove and let cool completely. Strain syrup into an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
