The basic idea of a Mint Julep has been around 900 A.D. Like most classic cocktails the origin is sparks controversy. The 1770s is most widely considered the first written mention of the cocktail. Gently muddle mint leaves and simple syrup together. Add bourbon and pack with very crushed ice. Top with aromatic bitters and garnish with a sprig of mint.
