Here's one for all those drinkers celebrating Dry January. When I first tried the amazing Red Fassionola syrup from BG Reynolds, I thought to myself, "This is like grenadine, but better!" Technically passion fruit and pomegranates are not the same thing, but I wanted to see how it would work, and I was not disappointed. Here's a more sophisticated version of a 'Shirley Temple'.

I have a PhD in chemistry, which is basically just mixology you're not supposed to drink, so the shift from lab to bar was pretty obvious.

View MoreAdd ginger syrup and club soda to a mixing glass with ice. Stir gently. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with fresh ice. Pour fassionola syrup down the side. Garnish with a mini umbrella and maraschino cherries.
Editor's Note
Ginger syrup adds a sharp, spicy bite to this tropical mocktail. The fassionola provides a complex, fruit-forward depth that transforms the classic Shirley Temple template.

This sounds like a fantastic, sophisticated take on a classic! I love the addition of ginger syrup to balance the tropical notes of the fassionola.
