Espresso Romano Martini

Submitted on: March 15, 2023
This cocktail is variation of the modern classic Espresso Martini, using the flavor profile of an Italian coffee drink called the Espresso Romano, otherwise known as a caffè canarino or caffè al limone. I can’t tell you exactly why lemon and espresso work so well together, but in my opinion the lemon’s brightness counteracts some of the bitter notes of espresso. They balance eachother well. I worried lemon juice would add too much acidity, so I went with an Italian lemon marmalade instead.

Shake all ingredients with ice, then double strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist rather than the traditional coffee beans. Sip, enjoy, but maybe don’t have too many of these too close to bed time.
Editor's Note
Lemon marmalade brightens the heavy coffee profile, offering a citrus-forward riff on the modern classic. A refreshing departure from the standard bean-topped serve.

This is such a clever way to elevate the classic Espresso Martini! The addition of lemon marmalade sounds like a fantastic way to balance the richness of the coffee.

Would a coffee concentrate work instead of the espresso?

This sounds fantastic. I couldn't agree more lemon and orange with espresso are my favorite flavor profiles. Cheers
