This is such an amazing classic cocktail! Originally made with Cognac but more modern recipes call for Rye whiskey. I’ve been told if you split the base between the two, it is a very amazing experience. If I had Cognac at home, I would have loved to have tried all three versions.

Rinse a chilled glass with absinthe and set aside. In a mixing glass, muddle the water, sugar cube, and bitters. Add the desired spirit and stir with ice until chilled. Strain into the prepared glass and express a lemon peel over the top. Garnish with the lemon peel and enjoy!
Editor's Note
The Sazerac balances rye's spice or cognac's depth against the floral, anise-heavy bite of Peychaud's and absinthe. A timeless, spirit-forward classic.

Love a good Sazerac. I've tried the split base and it definitely doesn't disappoint. Some have even split the base 3 ways between cognac, rye, and bourbon. They are all tasty, I always like two split the bitters 4:2 ratio with Angostura in mine. It's so fun to play with the bases on these classics.
