In French, "Vieux Carré" means "Old Square" and is what the French call New Orleans' French Quarter even today. The Vieux Carré cocktail was invented in the late 1930s by Walter Bergeron, the head bartender at what would become the famous Carousel Bar inside the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter. It's one of the IBA "Unforgettables" and with good reason. It's made with rye whiskey, cognac, sweet vermouth, Bénédictine, and two kinds of bitters.
