The famed Sazerac is perhaps the most noteworthy of New Orleans original cocktails. While the one we are mostly accustomed to is made with Rye, many believe that the original Sazerac used cognac as its base spirit. As with so much of cocktail history, no one knows for sure. Stir and strain into an absinthe-rinsed Old Fashioned glass. Serve neat. Garnish with a lemon twist.
Editor's Note
Cognac provides a rounded, fruit-forward base for this classic New Orleans serve. The absinthe rinse and Peychaud's bitters deliver the signature aromatic finish.
