California Summer

Now that fire season seems to be the new norm in the golden state, I got to thinking what a smoky California should taste like. I've always been looking for something to do with St. Georges amazing, but difficult to pair gin that tastes like a walk through Muir Woods. If you're a fan of smoky drinks, this one combines the flavor of Northern California's redwoods with southern California's orange groves... all gloriously ablaze. This cocktail is actually better than it deserves to be.

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir to chill. Strain into a coupe. Toast a healthy slice of orange peel over a match for a few seconds before adding the peel as a garnish. * Flaming Tincture: Get a handful (~1/4 cup) of Thai birdseye chilies. Chop into 1/4" pieces and combine with 1/4 Cup of vodka. Cover, and soak for 24 hours. Strain into a dropper bottle. Adds considerable heat to a drink without imparting much flavor.
Editor's Note
St. George's Terroir Gin brings a pine-forest backbone, met by smoky Laphroaig and sweet orange liqueur. A homemade chili tincture adds a final, fiery kick.

Made this last night and delicious as anticipated! I was lazy and used what I had on hand, so I used Biitermen’s Hellfire bitters. But it’s still delightful!
