Downtown L.A.'s Faith and Flower serves a cocktail by this name for brunch, and it is so deliciously light in flavor and contains enough hydration that is NOT whiskey to help you keep pace if brunch stretches on for hours, which it absolutely should. You can also garnish with fresh herbs or a maraschino cherry. Treat yourself! And if I'm with you, treat me!

Mary makes drinks for herself and friends. While her "usual" is Irish on the rocks, she loves to entertain others whose preferences span the spectrum, so she keeps an insanely well-stocked bar. At Chez Mary, not only will you find over thirty types of whiskey, you'll also find the ingredients and implements needed for complicated and exotic cocktails ranging from 13-ingredient tiki punches to fancy Manhattans with every variety of flavored bitters (Thanks, Brendan!). Have her tell you the story ...

View MoreFill a collins glass with ice (pebble ice is my favorite for this drink, but crushed or cubed will also do). Pour whisky over ice. Fill remainder of glass with club soda. Garnish with a twist of fresh lemon. (For best results, use a channel knife.) Be sure to twist the lemon over the glass, so the oils land on the drink.
Editor's Note
A masterclass in restraint. The highball relies on the quality of the whisky and the precision of the carbonation to deliver a crisp, refreshing experience.
